Women's Dionysian Initiation: The Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii

This talk, held by Tamara Wyndham, is based on the book of the same name authored by Linda Fierz-David.

The “Villa of Mysteries,” an ancient house just outside of Pompeii, was buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It features a room with beautiful murals depicting an initiation into a private Orphic/Dionysian cult, primarily centered on women.

We will go through the murals section by section, learning about their symbolism and possible interpretations. We will learn about ancient mystery cults, particularly those centering on Dionysus, which were popular for women in ancient times.

Jungian Psychology: Development of the Feminine

This presentation will look at the development of the psychological feminine archetype, known as the anima, through the lens of Jungian psychology. Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, active in the early 20th century, who founded the field of analytical psychology. As a Babalon Salon event, this presentation will also focus on the work of Emma Jung, Carl's wife and fellow collaborator on his analytic process. We will go through the four major stages of anima development, ending with a meditation seed for our Meditate and Create portion of the event.

Meditate & Create: Leonora Carrington

Emerging from the Paris surrealist group, the English-born Mexican writer and painter Leonora Carrington (England, 1917—Mexico, 2011) is considered,  next to Remedios Varo and Frida Kahlo, as one of the most important Mexican female artists of the last century. Also referred to as the “white goddess of surrealism” Leonora Carrington was perpetually suspicious of orthodoxy. Through her art, she often poked fun at, parodied, and ultimately upset traditional hierarchies of power. In her work animals impart wisdom, Goddesses loom large, and domestic spaces become sites of occult power.

Join us in our next Babalon Salon event of meditate-create to explore her extensive oeuvre loaded with occult symbolism and her personal experiences expressed through mystery and beauty.
